Good Afternoon New England Clerks
We are one month away from our week together at NEMCI&A and would like to update you on our plans. Your NEMCI&A Board of Directors has been hard at work to deliver a fun and rewarding educational week at Saint Michael’s.
It seems that we are destined to continue last year’s theme of change. I’ve already reported to you that Dr. Kate Ackerman has retired and two new professors were hired to take her place. Now it is with deep sadness that I must report another faculty change. Our computer guru, our favorite “old bald guy” and champion dancer Al Borsodi has requested that we find a replacement for him this year. He is retiring from his teaching position at Groveton High School. He is also addressing some health issues that seem to be flaring up with the stress of his life changes. We are all hoping that we’ll be able to work with Al again in the future, but need to give him the opportunity to address his personal issues this year.
Late last week, we confirmed Al’s replacement. Her name is Kathleen Slivka. She is a computer training and support professional with 16 years of experience in a number of different training capacities including Adjunct Professor at Western Connecticut State University. She will be teaching Academy A – Microsoft Suite for Clerks where you will learn three programs using templates that can be personalized for your towns. Kathleen spoke with Al and is comfortable with the course curriculum.
We are experiencing another year of increased enrollment, in fact, there are only a few spots open in Academy D – Personnel Management. If you haven’t yet registered for any class, please email Sandra Harris at vernontc@sover.net to save your spot. Please check out www.newenglandclerks.org by the end of the week. Information and prework will be posted.
Hope you are all well. We look forward to seeing many of you at NEMCI&A at Saint Michael’s. Please email me at lfrancis@townofdurhamct.org if you have any questions.

Kathleen Latuch, Clerk of Plymouth, New Hampshire was killed in a car accident last Friday morning. Her funeral was 12-13-06.
Ethelyn Marthia, Town Clerk in Kennebunk, Maine, passed away in the early hours of 12-13-06. She put up a valiant fight against the cancer. You may recall that recently we asked that you contact your local delegates to support a request to allow Etheyn's son to be able to obtain special leave from a redeployment to Afghanistan in order to see her through all of this. The leave was granted because of those efforts.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to both the Mathias and Latuch families and also to those of you who had the pleasure to work with these two wonderful people.
Funeral arrangements for Ethelyn are as follows:
Visitation Hours: Bibber's Memorial Chapel (Kennebunk)
Friday, Dec. 15th from 2 - 4 p.m. and 6 - 8 p.m.Saturday, Dec. 16th from 1 - 4 p.m.
Celebration of Life Service: The New Life Christian Church (551 Alfred Rd, Biddeford (across from Home Depot)
Monday, Dec. 18th at 11:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The New Life Christian Church, 551 Alfred Road, Biddeford, ME 04005. More information will be posted on Bibber's website ( www.bibberfuneral.com ) this afternoon. This information can also be found on the Town's website ( www.kennebunkmaine.us ).

Dear City or Town Clerk:
The Council of State Archivists (CoSA), under a grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission, is conducting a study to develop recommendations on how local governments can improve methods for the preservation of, and access to, their records holdings. Specifically, these recommendations will cover the following issues: sustainable funding for local government archives; raising awareness and strengthening advocacy; training in managing local government records; and the impact of new technologies.
CoSA has developed an online questionnaire which is being used to gather insights and opinions on these issues. Following is a press release about that questionnaire, and an invitation for you to participate in the survey. We would very much welcome your participation. Thank you. http://www.statearchivists.org/lga/questions.htm

Good Morning:
I have received a letter from Donna Dutton, City Clerk of the City of Watertown, New York and Sue Iverson, of Mahtomdei, Minnesota. They have been charged with the task of compiling the IIMC history from 1996 through the present.
What they ask of us is to submit photos, written information, documents, etc. for inclusion into this project. Photos, documents and information from Clerk institutes, educational sessions, conferences and on the job would be appreciate. Please make sure that all photos submitted have written descriptions. If possible, photos and documents should be scanned and e-mailed. They will also accept information via snail mail. Addresses, etc. are below. They would appreciate submissions by March 31.
I’m sure many of us have photos from Salve and it would be great if we could get some of these published in this publication.

I am looking for testimonials from NEMCI&A Graduates. Please share your inspirational stories about how the NEMCI experience affected your personal and professional lives. I know that taking the computer Academy class was the spark that ignited the fire in me to develop our municipal website and Connecticut Town Clerks Association website. I was honored to also help with the NEACTC website. My education through NEMCI enabled me to give back to the organizations that have been so supportive over many years. What a gift! Attention New England Clerks
The New England Municipal Clerks Institute and Academy (NEMCI&A) needs your help. For years, NEMCI&A has used NEACTC’s logo in our promotional material. This board has decided that it is about time to have our own logo/seal that embodies the spirit of the only Institute and Academy that is run for clerks, by clerks.
Please participate in a Logo Design Contest, sponsored by NEMCI&A. A prize, plus bragging rights, will be awarded to the winning designer. Email your design to Laura Francis, NEMCI&A Promotion & Marketing at lfrancis@townofdurhamct.org by January 12, 2006.
Thank you for your help. Happy Holidays!
